L'Acadie était une province francophone de l'est canadien. Fondée en 1604 en tant que colonie française, avec une population principalement originaire de l'ouest de la France, elle est cédée en 1713, par le traité d’Utrecht aux Britanniques et prend le nom de Nouvelle- Ecosse.

Persuadés que « les Français de la Nouvelle-Écosse ne seront jamais de bons sujets de Sa Majesté... » et les terres fertiles et bien cultivées étant convoitées par les nouveaux colons venus d’Angleterre, l’expulsion est décidée en 1755.

Environ 10 000 Acadien(e)s furent embarqué(e)s sur de vieux rafiots britanniques, les familles furent séparées. Eparpillées le long de la côte Atlantique, certains s’établirent à Saint Domingue et en Louisiane.

Henry Longfellow écrivit un poème « Évangéline » racontant l’histoire de deux fiancés acadiens séparés par le « Grand Dérangement », mais réunis par leur amour au moment de mourir.

Acadia was a French Settlement located in Eastern Canada. Founded in 1604 with a majority French population coming from Western France, its territories were ceded to the English in 1713 by the Treaty d'Utrecht and thereafter named Nova Scotia.

Convinced that the French in Nova Scotia would never become faithful subjects of the King,,,>> and given the locality of their fertile and cultivated lands, those British subject who had come from England decided to expulse the Acadians in 1755.

Approximately 10,000 Acadians were forced to board British ships, without regards to their children and families who were separated during transportation and moved to the East Atlantic Coast. Some re-established themselves in Saint Domingue and Louisiana.

Henry Longfellow wrote a poem entitled <<Evangeline>> detailing the story of and engaged Acadian couple, separated during the expulsion, but re-united just prior to their death.
